What Happened to Black Hollywood?

Earlier today, a judge ended Lindsay Lohan’s cakewalk probation which gives her full freedom to do whatever she wants. I don’t need to remind you how many times over the past few years, Lohan has been arrested, jailed and released. Her freedom comes at a hefty price; not for her personally but for casting agents willing to work with her. Lohan has a list of gigs lined up. She recently hosted an episode of Saturday Night Live which received record ratings. She is taping a guest spot on the hit show Glee. Later this year she will portray Elizabeth Taylor in a biographical film on the late actress.

Seriously?…Elizabeth Taylor?

Right at this moment, there is a talented, well-known African-American actor sitting in an audition line for a menial part in a low-budget production. Lohan, on the other hand, sits poolside mulling over a stack of scripts to accept or turn down. But it’s not just Lindsay. Britney Spears, Paris Hilton and the Kardashian clan’s stars continue to shine brightly while African-American actors are left in the dark.

Think I’m overreacting? Well answer the following question. Take a look at the recent black Oscar winners: Denzel Washington, Cuba Gooding, Jamie Foxx, Morgan Freeman, Halle Berry, Jennifer Hudson, Mo’Nique and Octavia Spencer. Name a hit movie in which any of them had a starring role since their Oscar win?

It took a while to name just one (if any). I’ll use Jamie Foxx as an example. Since his Oscar win for Ray in 2004, Foxx has appeared in 13 films; only 3 were starring roles and only one was a hit movie (Rio, he was the voice of Nico the bird). His most recent on-screen role was in Horrible Bosses where he played Dean “Mutherfuckah” Jones.

Yeah, I wish I was kidding too.

And black women in this profession
As for playin’ a lawyer, out of the question
For what they play Aunt Jemima is the perfect term
Even if now she got a perm
So let’s make our own movies like Spike Lee
Cause the roles being offered don’t strike me
There’s nothing that the black man could use to earn
Burn Hollywood Burn

  1. Dope article. It’s a shame that Lindsey can do all this dirt & only increase her brand, meanwhile Janet’s been blackballed since the wardrobe incident, reduced to only Tyler Perry films. Always been a double standard. And it doesn’t help that Hollywood would give popular rappers with no acting experience a part before many Black actors, b/c a lot of times they’re written with them in mind. Leaving many once potentially great movie stars to sitcom or primetime actors, if they’re lucky.

  2. So true Tre. Every time I see Cuba in a movie like Snow Dogs, I think what they is an Oscar winner doing in this movie. When I saw that Octavia won her Oscar, I was thinking, there goes the end of her career. It is a sad state of affairs. George Lucas has to put up his own money to make a movie with a black cast…smh.
